Guatemala
Hurricane Stan reached Guatemala in early October, 2005, and brought with it heavy rainfall that resulted in mudslides and flooding in the mountainous country. Over 1,500 people died and several thousand more were left missing. Thousands were displaced from their homes.
On October 24, 2005, Orphan Grain Train's Norfolk warehouse shipped a 40-ft. container filled with beans, health kits, medical supplies, medical equipment, school kits and school paper to Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The container arrived in December 2005 and its contents were distributed in the early part of 2006 by Christo Para Todas Las Naciones Guatemala. The beans were distributed immediately among hurricane survivors temporarily living in hotels, and the school and medical supplies were given to the Lutheran churches and missions of Guatemala.
